God’s Promise – The Inspiration Behind the Song

God’s Promise                                                                                          New Years Day, 2003

1 John 5:11 And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

John 3:16 ESV

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

I had just returned to my Kentucky farm from my first visit to Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, CA.  I walked out into the pasture and there was Maggie, one of my new breeds of cows called Cookies n Crème Cows lying down and I walked over and petted her.  Then I looked around and noticed all my animals were surrounding me in a circle, my Quarter Horse mare of 33 years, the other Cookies N Crème Cows and Rebecca and Rachael my donkeys that were given to me to protect the calves and myself from coyotes.  I said, “Maggie I’ve moved you so many times from here, there to everywhere just to protect you and give you a long life.  I’ve taken you wherever I go and I cannot count the times you’ve ridden in a trailer and have had to move.  And I did this because I love you and want to protect you and give you a long life”.

In that moment, a melody started rolling around in my head for the lyrics, here and there anyplace everywhere.  And I said to myself, “Nobody knows how long a cow lives because their life is cut short by man.”

I spent the remainder of the day writing the song, God’s Promise.  It occurred to me that God loves us the same way I love my cows and gave us eternal life.

So I tell everyone my cows inspired a song and thus have earned their keep.  It’s about what my cows taught me about God.
